It’s always been on the back of my mind doing a 10km race but once Anna sent through the “lets do it” email this morning, it was game on.
I’ve officially entered the Two Oceans Half Marathon (21kms) 2012.

Now this means a few things:

- New running shoes that will help with my shin splints and work with my orthotics. Which is the best brand honestly? Adidas, Asics, Nike? Someone with knowledge please advice.
- Lose that weight I was talking about
- A running plan – will browse through Runners World soon
- Eating correctly – Dietician here I come… soon
- Sportsmans Warehouse to buy more running clothes
- iPhone pouch for running and headphones
- Sunglasses: check
- A good dose of humour = laughter, to get through the training ahead
- 3 others running: Anna, Karma & Ray. Epic
Looking awesome!

I’m a big fan of New Balance I would look at getting the 890 REVlites

The shoes depend on you TOTALLY. Adidas are more narrow than most. New Balance are a bit heavier (not talking about minimalist shoes here). Personally I use Asics for road and New Balance for trail.
Best bet is go to Cape Runner (in plumstead). They will measure your foot – width, length and suggest some shoes (usually 3). Then run around the parking lot – they watch and comment – sometimes change the shoes.
They also allow you to return the shoes within reason. For example I bought a pair of Solomans – went for a 3km run at home and they rubbed up my big toe – I returned them without any issues to Cape Runner and got a different brand that was amazing and I wore to death (sniff).
As for clothing – if you have specific things you like – get someone to bring them from the US. You can order them online for half the price sold in SA
Check my blog for the 10km to 21km plan I used (part of Sport Science Institute for South Africa). It was 8 weeks and VOILA!! Believe me, I thought it was impossible
